The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has announced a major shift in how computer science is taught at polytechnics and monotechnics. The HND Computer Science program is being retired, and in its place, four new specialized areas will be introduced:
- Artificial Intelligence: Learn about the technology behind self-driving cars, smart assistants, and intelligent algorithms.
- Networking and Cloud Computing: Dive into the world of building and managing computer networks and unleashing the power of the cloud.
- Software and Web Development: Master the skills to create powerful software applications and stunning websites.
- Cybersecurity and Data Protection: Become a guardian of the digital world, protecting information from online threats.
What does this mean for you?
New students starting after the 2024/2025 academic year: You won’t be able to apply for the old HND Computer Science program. Instead, choose one of the exciting new specializations that best match your interests and career goals.
Current HND Computer Science students: Don’t worry, you’ll be able to finish your studies as planned. The program won’t be phased out until 2025, giving you enough time to graduate.
Why is this happening?
The NBTE believes that focusing on specific areas within computer science will better prepare graduates for the rapidly evolving job market. They want to ensure Nigerian students have the skills and knowledge to compete in a globalized tech landscape.
Get excited! This is a chance for Nigeria to take a leading role in the future of technology. By specializing in cutting-edge fields like AI and cybersecurity, students will be equipped to tackle the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow.
