Who can Apply?
- Be a citizen of an African country
- Have a strong academic background, with at least a 70% average in your final year of your previous degree
- Be 30 years old or younger for Master’s applications and 35 years old or younger for PhD applications
- Be able to start your studies in February 2023 (although this may be subject to change due to COVID-19)
- Submit a separate application to Stellenbosch University for your desired program in addition to the scholarship application
Types of Scholarships Offered
Stellenbosch University offers two types of scholarships under the Postgraduate Scholarship program:

- MA & PhD “Turning the Tide” Scholarships: These scholarships provide funding for three years for PhD students (up to R357,500) and 18 months to two years for Master’s students (up to R160,000). In addition to tuition and living expenses, these scholarships may also cover research activities like conferences, publications, and writing retreats.
- Lisa Maskell / PANGeA Scholarships: These scholarships provide funding for up to three years for PhD students (up to R420,000). Similar to the “Turning the Tide” scholarships, these may also include support for research activities.
What documents do I need to apply?
- Completed application form
- Writing sample:
- Master’s thesis for PhD applicants
- Honors research essay for Master’s applicants
- Any published academic articles related to your field of study
- Motivation letter (maximum 600 words) explaining why you’re a good candidate for the scholarship and the program
- Pre-proposal (maximum 500 words) outlining your research topic, its significance, methodology, and feasibility
- Certified copies of your academic transcripts
- Certified copy of your Master’s degree certificate (or proof that you will receive it before March 2023)
- Certified copy of your South African ID or International passport
How to Apply
- Click on the button below to visit the scholarship application page.
- Go to the applicant portal on SUNStudent, create a profile if you haven’t already, and log in.
- Click on “Programme selection”. Select “Faculty of Science – Stellenbosch”. On program type selec “Postgraduate”, select “MSc (Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence)” on programme, then select either full-time or part-time.
- Complete the required information from the menus on the left panel.
- Successful applicants will be notified in September.
