Who funds DAAD?

The German Academic Exchange Service, known as DAAD, is the world’s largest organization dedicated to promoting international academic exchange for students and researchers. In 2023, DAAD operated with a budget of approximately €839.3 million. This funding primarily comes from various public sources:

  • Federal Foreign Office (AA): Contributes about 26.1% of the budget.
  • Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF): Provides around 23.8%.
  • Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ): Accounts for 6.6%.
  • European Union and other international organizations: Make up 40.2% of the funding.
