No Express Entry Draws in May Lead to Higher CRS Cut-Off Scores for Canadian Immigration

Are you aiming to immigrate to Canada through the Express Entry system? This recent development might impact your plans. Canada Immigration News brings you an update on the current pause in Express Entry draws and what it means for the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score cut-offs.

No Draws in May Lead to Higher CRS Cut-Offs

As of May 2024, there haven’t been any Express Entry draws this month. This is a significant change compared to the usual bi-weekly draws conducted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). The last draw happened on April 24th, targeting French-speaking candidates with a cut-off score of 410. The general draw before that, on April 23rd, had a cut-off score of 529.

This lack of draws in May is expected to push the CRS cut-off score for upcoming general draws even higher. The previous all-time high for a general draw was 549 in April, but it seems that number will be surpassed.

Express Entry Draws in 2024 So Far

Here’s a quick recap of Express Entry draws in 2024:

  • Total Draws: 17
  • Total Invitations to Apply (ITAs) Issued: 35,930
  • General Draws: 40% of total ITAs
  • French-speaking Draws: 34% of total ITAs

Interestingly, all the category-based draws for 2024 have happened except for the Skilled Trades draw. This is a highly anticipated category for many aspiring immigrants.

What to Expect for Upcoming Draws?

The next Express Entry draw is likely to occur around May 28th, 2024. It will probably start with general draws followed by French-speaking or Skilled Trades draws.

Skilled Trades Draw

We haven’t seen a Skilled Trades draw yet in 2024. In 2023, the two Skilled Trades draws had cut-off scores of 388 and 425. Due to many candidates in the pool now having credentials for the Trades category, the CRS cut-off score for the 2024 Skilled Trades draw is expected to be around 430 or higher.

General Draws

For general draws, the CRS cut-off score might reach a new high of around 550 or even more. This prediction depends on how many ITAs IRCC issues in the upcoming draws. Larger draws could potentially lead to lower cut-off scores.

Reason for the Delay in Draws

There’s no official confirmation on why IRCC has paused the Express Entry draws. However, here are some possible explanations:

Processing Existing Applications: IRCC might be focusing on processing the applications already in the system before inviting new candidates.
Proof of Funds Update: Candidates have until May 27th to update their profiles with the new proof of funds requirements. IRCC might be waiting until this deadline passes before resuming draws.

Next Express Entry Draw

With two bi-weekly draws skipped, the next Express Entry draw is anticipated around May 28th, 2024.

While the pause in draws might present challenges, staying informed and prepared is crucial for anyone considering Express Entry for Canadian immigration.
